The Bahamas Middle Temple Society is a professional legal society emerging from collaboration between The Bahamas Bar Association and the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London. The Society aims to strengthen advocacy skills, promote professional development and forge ongoing relationships between legal professionals in The Bahamas and the global Middle Temple community.
A highlight of the Society’s activities is The Bahamas Middle Temple Week 2026: ‘Perfecting Your Advocacy, an intensive courtroom training programme to be held from the 19th until the 23rd of January 2026. The training will be led by the Master Treasurer, Bernard Richmond KC, alongside senior King’s Counsel, judiciary mentors, and expert practitioners, offering specialised instruction in practical courtroom skills and techniques. This programme reflects the Society’s commitment to advancing advocacy competence among Bahamian lawyers and advocates.
The Bahamas Middle Temple Society (BMTS) is a part of a broader network of Middle Temple international societies that support legal professionalism and training across the Commonwealth and beyond. The Middle Temple’s international societies are established in various jurisdictions with the objectives of advancing the profession, facilitating links with Middle Temple, promoting the rule of law, and fostering knowledge sharing, advocacy training and professional events.
While the modern Bahamas-Middle Temple Society’s formal structures are tied to current collaborative programmes like the 2026 advocacy week, the Middle Temple Society in the Bahamas itself was launched in April 2009, coinciding with a visit by the Master Treasurer and other Middle Temple representatives engaged in outreach and legal education activities. This early period, as noted by Middle Templar magazine, saw Middle Temple members and Bahamian legal professionals working together on educational initiatives and public legal engagement.
In September 2010, BMTS worked with Middle Temple members to deliver a major advocacy training course in Nassau, attended by lawyers, prosecutors, police officers, and senior Bahamian legal figures. The programme included civil and criminal advocacy training modules, an opening ceremony with notable attendees, practical courtroom techniques, and celebrations that brought together judges, attorneys and law students.
The purpose of the Society extends beyond one-off events. It represents a commitment to sustained professional development, practical skills training, constructive dialogues on legal procedure and practice, and the strengthening of cross-jurisdictional relationships within the common law tradition shared by The Bahamas and the United Kingdom. The Society encourages high quality advocacy training and courtroom preparedness, professional development for members of the Bar, linkages to a global professional network, and community and mentorship opportunities with senior practitioners and judges.
Through regular programmes like Middle Temple Week and future CPD events, the Society continues to deepen the professional capabilities of attorneys and legal practitioners across the region.
The Bahamas Middle Temple Week 2026 is structured around intensive advocacy training, including practical workshops, mentor feedback, simulation exercises, and specialised guidance from experienced counsel and judiciary members. The training emphasises civil, criminal and in-house and advisory advocacy, giving participants comprehensive exposure to courtroom techniques and best practices.
Held at a central location in Nassau, the weeklong programme exemplifies the Society’s mission to enhance legal capabilities while fostering a community of practice grounded in excellence.
